Fear Not

As I explained in Video 1 pretty much all negative emotions can be traced back to fear.  Stress, worry, anxiety, feeling depressed, anger, etc., are all expressions of fear. When we can let go of all fear, then we are at peace regardless of the circumstances. So, what causes us to have so much fear?

I will try to make this simple. We live in a world of uncertainty. We can’t control anyone or anything except ourselves (and most of the time we don’t even control ourselves). There are many forces outside of us that affect us: the weather, government, traffic, family members, neighbors, coworkers, etc. So, in a way we are all very vulnerable, and a victim to countless things outside of our control. Any moment we could be hurt by something we can’t predict. In video 3 I discuss how our survival system plays a role in this. Because of the uncertainty of life, our survival system is on guard. Hurtful things have happened in the past, and will happen in the future. Our survival system seems to operate on the idea that fear will keep us safe. So, most people live in fear most of the time because we live in an uncertain world. Since these are the circumstances we live in, how do we let go of fear?

We need to add some more ingredients to our life. We need to trust and have faith that there is something more than the here and now. If we are mere creatures on this planet, with no more purpose than to live, reproduce, buy stuff, and die, then I don’t know of a way to let go of fear. We need to have faith that there is a reason for our existence, a purpose behind pain. When we accept that there is a loving Creator who put us here for a reason, then we can begin to have hope in life. We may not completely understand God’s plan for us and our planet, but we can trust that there is a purpose for our existence. When a person is connected to their God given purpose in life, we can have confidence that all of our negative experiences can ultimately be for our good.

There is a God. My personal experience leaves me no doubt that God lives, and that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for the sins and the pain of all mankind. As you come to know God and his Son, you can give every negative, hurtful burden to him, and he can turn the pain into joy. He can turn despair into hope. He provides mercy so you can learn from mistakes and move forward and improve. Jesus Christ is the light and the life of the world, it is because of him that we can have peace in this life and let go of fear. Some people think if there was really a God, there wouldn’t be so much pain and suffering in life. Some ask how a loving God could allow so much inequality? In video 4 I illustrate how God has the wisdom to let us work through the challenges of this imperfect world because he loves us. He knows what we can become, and if he removed the challenges of life it would be a disservice. What would we ever learn if there were no problems to solve? How could a person ever learn math if he never had a math problem to solve?

So give your burden of fear to Christ. One of his most often repeated teaching was “Fear not.” He encouraged us to believe that all things are possible. The more we trust him, the more light, peace, love, hope and purpose there is in life. The more we turn away from Christ, the more we walk in darkness and feel fear in our life. Christ is the light of the world. Walk in the light and learn to be happy in imperfect circumstances!
